National Institutes of Health, NIH (Precision Medicine)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spine. We applied advanced data science approaches to analyze RNA sequencing data from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis type 4 (ALS4) patients. This was done in partnership with a clinical researcher with the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The goal was to understand the expression patterns of genes and proteins contributing to the disease. With our approach, Netrias helped our research partners identify 15 different candidate genes from the ~400 candidates identified using conventional bioinformatics approaches. Of these 15 candidates, five genes were determined to be biologically interesting, and six others need further investigation to determine their relationship to ALS4.
